On Monday, May 27th, the Brothers of William JL Crisp Lodge No. 279 (PHA) came together with our community to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. This Memorial Day was marked by heartfelt tributes and a deep sense of gratitude for our fallen heroes, reflecting the true spirit of the holiday.

A Morning of Remembrance
The day's activities began with Worshipful Master Brother Jacoby Stewart and Brother Mark Joseph joining the Plano Elks Lodge #2485 to place flags on the gravestones of our fallen but not forgotten heroes at Big Springs Cemetery in Plano. This solemn and respectful service event set the tone for the day, reminding us all of the sacrifices made by those who have served.
Inaugural Memorial Day Observance
Following the morning's events, the William JL Crisp Lodge hosted its Inaugural Memorial Day Observance at the Old City and L.A. Davis Conjoined Cemeteries, located in the Historic Douglas Community of Plano, TX. With special dispensation granted, the brothers were authorized to dress in Full Masonic Regalia, adding a formal and dignified presence to the ceremony.
During this observance, we shared the historical background of Memorial Day, a day that has its origins rooted deeply in American history. The influence of African Americans in the establishment of this federal holiday cannot be overstated. After the Civil War, formerly enslaved African Americans in Charleston, South Carolina, held one of the first recorded Memorial Day commemorations in 1865. Their efforts laid the groundwork for what would become a national day of remembrance.
The historical significance of the Old City and L.A. Davis Conjoined Cemetery was also highlighted, as it stands as a testament to the rich history and contributions of the African American community in Plano. We were honored to have representatives from John R. Lewis #280 (PHA), Plano Elks Lodge #2485 and members of Plano Lodge #114, Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.), in attendance to support our efforts.
Continuing the Tribute
After the program at the Old City and L.A. Davis Cemetery concluded, Senior Warden Brother Isaac Ricard and Past Master Brother Quincy Thomas extended their support to Brother Rodney Lewis. Brother Lewis, a member of both William JL Crisp Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #315, was partnering with the city of Wylie, TX, to host their Memorial Day program. Their participation exemplifies our ongoing commitment to honoring our veterans and supporting community events.
Looking Ahead
The Brothers of William JL Crisp Lodge No. 279 are proud to have been active participants in this year's Memorial Day activities. We are committed to continuing our engagement with the community and look forward to future opportunities to honor our heroes. As we reflect on the significance of Memorial Day, we remember that the freedoms we enjoy today are built upon the sacrifices of those who came before us. It is our duty and privilege to keep their memories alive.
Memorial Day serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery and dedication of our military service members. The contributions of African Americans in shaping this holiday highlight the inclusive and diverse nature of our nation's history. The William JL Crisp Lodge No. 279 is dedicated to preserving this legacy and ensuring that the stories of our fallen heroes are never forgotten.
